Moreover, high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels increase the risk of diabetes and its complications. Stress, another risk factor, can influence blood glucose levels by triggering the release of stress hormones.

Gestational diabetes during pregnancy can increase a woman's risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.
